Transpiration

Transpiration is the process of releasing water into the atmosphere when plants undergo photosynthesis.

6 CO2 + 12 H2O - - -> C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O

This can be demonstrated by placing a clear plastic bag over some leaves, preferably under bright sun. This is best done early in the fall semester, and late in the spring semester.

At the beginning of lab, wrap a large Ziploc bag around some leaves of a tree or shrub.

Try to zip up the bag as tightly as possible around the twig, without harming the leaves but minimizing moisture escape.

At the end of lab, examine bag for condensation.
